New 3M™ Speedglas Auto-Darkening Welding Lens

AWS has launched the latest addition to the series of Speedglas auto-darkening welding shields. In 2004 a newly-developed electronics unit prepared the ground for the Speedglas™ 9002 welding lenses. Now AWS has released an additional model in this range, the Speedglas 9002D, an auto-darkening welding shield with two selectable shades and sensitivity levels.

The welding lens has two dark states, shade 9 or 11. Users can also choose to increase the sensitivity of the detector function when needed.

The new Speedglas 9002D welding lens gives the welder flexibility and the opportunity to personally adapt the equipment for different working applications.

The Speedglas 9002D has two levels of sensor sensitivity, allowing the welder to adjust to changing work requirements. For example, when using low-amp TIG, you might want to increase the sensitivity of the lens. The state for increased sensitivity can detect TIG welding down to 20 Amps.

“The new electronics were developed based on feedback gathered from welders around the world,” says Chris Neville, managing director at AWS. “Hundreds of thousands of welders worldwide use our protective equipment, and their opinions provide valuable input to our product development.”

Speedglas welding lenses always provide UV/IR protection for the eyes, regardless of whether they are switched on or off, dark or light. With Speedglas auto-darkening lenses, welders can always see, allowing them to keep their shields in the safe down position, increasing their eye and face protection when compared to traditional, non-auto-darkening shields.

Speedglas welding lenses are made of a seven-layer laminate: a UV/IR lens, three polarisation lenses, three liquid crystal elements, and a cover lens.
